- The capital of the Roman province of Macedonia and situated on the Via Egnatia; it enjoyed much prosperity and was an important city for Paul's missionary work. Religious cults flourished, both pagan and Jewish, and divine honours were accorded the goddess Roma—evidence of indebtedness to Roman benefactors. An inscription has been found which is evidence that the unusual term ‘politarchs’ was used for the rulers of the city, as correctly given in Acts 17:6 (NRSV marg.).
